Fed Up with Sewing Your Own clothes But they still don't fit?
Sick of
Wasting Time & Fabric on Failed Projects?
Discover the
Secret of How the pros do it.

Top Quality, Wide-Width Calico is Hard to Find

~ Order by the bolt .... and Save ~

..... this is a 5 metre bolt,
..... 2400 mm in Width (or 94.5" inches)
..... that's 240 cm - twice as wide as most dress fabric

..... you get a usable, un-cut length with FULL width
..... better than paying by the meter
..... you order it by the bolt, for BEST Value

*NOTE: This Calico is double folded in WIDTH and then rolled on the bolt to make the bolt size compact - so it is 4 laters thick when you unroll.

If you're looking at calico in bulk, chances are...

  • You're learning pattern making / fashion design, and need some for class.
  • You've been struggling with getting the right fit from sewing patterns.
  • You're sick & tired of wasting money on good fabric when patterns don't produce results like the pictures on the envelops!

Feeling frustrated because you can't get the right fit from store-bought sewing patterns? You're not alone...

"I've never had any success with using sewing patterns straight out of the pack, so now I always make a toile / mock up garment and go through lots of calico.

This is a good quality medium weight calico. For the price this fabric is well worth it - NOT thin & flimsy like the cheaper stuff.

I recently made a toile for my corset which needed to be firm and able to hold its shape - the toile in this calico worked out really well and my corset turned out amazing!

This calico handles like a dream, smooth to touch and very easy to sew. My order arrived very fast and I would highly recommend this seller."

- Grace, a Happy Customer

Most of us have expereienced this - you go through the trouble of making your own clothes from sewing patterns - expect them to fit like a glove.

But that often doesn't work out in reality...

Ask anybody who sews.....

There's NOTHING more annoying than having to unpick & tweak garmet you've just spent ages to make - because it didn't fit out of the packet....

Not to mention the time & fabric you've wasted! Grrrr...

What if there's a way to ensure a perfect fit - before cutting into your "good" fabric?

No more "damn" moments when you realise you're better off startng again, and NEVER have to tweak or unpick - ever again?

Often the hard part is to come up with exactly the right method that works for you.

Of course, there is no shortcut to become an accomplished dressmaker...

But the first step in creating professional result is knowing the correct method and having the right material on hand.

"Love this calico. It is so versatile and the price is excellent.

I'm using it for making toile / test sample garments, which can be quite a challenge because of my ambitious designs, yet it copes fine!

It has a sturdy feel, like good calico should, and doesn't have a particular roughness or abrasiveness about it.

I like the extra wide width and love that it came in one continuous piece, with smooth, non-puckering selvages. It also does not fray as much as cheaper / lower quality stuff I've tried before.

In fact, the quality of the fabric is excellent and the cream colour is perfect. This is the second order I have made as the I was so impressed with the previous order. It arrived quickly too. Definitely recommended."

- Lucy, a Happy Customer

The Secret of solving pattern fitting headaches is starting the "Proper" way - is to simply make a Test Garment first.

That's where Calico comes in. You'll see why...

Simply cut the pattern out in calico and whizz it up with big stitches. So you can try this thing on to make sure it fits you.

"I just love how wide this calico is, compare to others.

Excellent quality at a great price - works out to be half the price of my local fabric shop because I get so much out of this bolt!

I think the weight is lovely, great for making toiles for my medieval dress and other costumes.

You get plenty for your money. Would order again."

- Kath, a Happy Customer

Here's a little bit of insider information...

Having worked for a decade or so behind the scene in the clothing industry, I was formally trained as a Fashion Designer - and later spent 10 years teaching others the joy of sewing. I like to share insider tricks, and I believe in doing things properly.

Now, let me share a little-known secret from behind the scene...

The real difference is in the method - before we even start drafting sewing patterns.

When we started fashion design at uni, one of the first thing we learnt is that EVERYTHING begins with a basic block (also known as a "pattern sloper" in North America).

These blocks serve as blank canvas - a starting point to turn our illustrations into REAL garments, so we begin drafting flat patterns on paper.

But...

How Do You Know IF Your Design would work on an actual body? Would it fit? Would it be flattering?

The only way to know is to TEST it - by making a "toile" first - a test sample garment in a plain, inexpensive material that has enough body and able to withstand a reasonable amount of handling. Calico is most ideal for this.

By making your first prototype in Calico gives you a chance to test the pattern, the fit, the design lines and proportion without ruining expensive fabrics, and also means that the design can be viewed in it’s purest form before print and colour distract away from any possible construction issues.

That means while making a sample garment in calico seems to be an extra step, it actually saves time AND effort
- with consistent, professional results.

Even the most iconic couturiers in the world still use this method everyday.

Here - watch the master artisan in action at Christian Dior:

Not just for high-end fashions - this step is even more important for everyday fitting.

When I make garments for myself, because I'm one of many that fall between sizes and have different sizes on chest / waist / hips, there is ALWAYS a need to adjust store-bought patterns.

To avoid headaches of wasted time and fabric, I draft the pattern first, adding any design elements, then whizz up a sample garment in calico, and try it on.

Any fitting issues will be picked up and ironed out at this point, and I'll simply adjust my pattern before cutting into my final fabric. Happy days!

And this is how things are done in the real world - because fashion designers and patternmakers simply don't have time for stuffing around with patterns - and they certainly cannot afford to produce poorly fitted garments.

That's why every design house and proper dressmakers keep calico on hand for toiles!

So this is the method I actually use myself - along with other pros.
Now You Can, too.

Start creating your garments the RIGHT way.

Let's Talk About Calico....

They aren't all the same. Good qualty calico is a joy to work with...

And getting calico in bulk is definitely the way to go - because there's nothing more annoying than running out in the middle of your sewing session. Right?

"Excellent quality fabric, I would go so far as to say the best value calico fabric I have bought for many years, for this kind of quality and price I will be back for more regularly.

I like the idea of buying bulk so I have enough on hand for my project, as I don't like to run out half way through.

The extra wide width really makes it cheaper than I could buy locally - this alone is worth my while for ordering online."

- Hannah, a Happy Customer

Let's see what you get...

A Whole Bolt of Extra-Wide, 100% Cotton, Top-Quality Calendared Calico

Each bolt contains 5 Meters x 240cm Width
- neatly folded & rolled ready to go!

See - most dress fabric is 120cm in width, so this bolt would give you TWICE as much fabric to play with - in comparison to your "good" fabric that you're planning to use.

Besides, ording by the bolt gives you ONE continuous length for any project you have in mind. That's enough to make quite a few garments!

Fact: Most Other Cheap Calico are only 90 cm - very narrow.

Our calico is specifically made wider than most fabric - at 240 cm. This gives you the most amount of usable width without adding excessive meterage and cost.

Remember - because your dress fabric are 120cm wide, having a cheap, narrow 90cm width just means you often end up short, and having to make last minute store runs in the middle of your project, defeating any benefit of saving time and efforts!

Instead, get the RIGHT amount in the first place so you can sew to your hearts content :-)

"Good quality calico with the proper cotton smell I remember from my college days!

It's quite decent weight and looks good. I am using it for dressmaking toiles and also bunting and bias binding. It cuts well and sews well.

Good enough for patchwork quilting too - though you might want to prewash it first in case there's shrinkage - I haven't tried it yet.

So far, very pleased and would buy again."

- Fran, a Happy Customer

So, what exactly is a "Toile"?

A ‘toile’ (pronounced ‘twahl’) is basically a mock-up garment made in calico. It's a practice version of the garment you plan to sew.

See the 2nd Definition below:

Known as "muslin" in North America, "Toile" is the term used mainly in the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

In this context, it refers to a prototype version of your garment made with the intention to check your pattern - and make any alteration to improve the fit - before cutting into your good fabric.

Toiles can be whipped up quickly - there is no need to finish them like you would with actual garment.

You don't have to overlock the edges or anything, and you don't need to hem them either - because it's a mock-up to be whipped up quickly, and not a garment you would wash or wear. Making them in calico makes this excercise easy and inexpensive - with accurate results.

You can often omit parts of the pattern that don't relate to the fit - such as collars and pockets.

In fact, the only reason you would includ them is to check their proportion or position, and whether they work well with your overall design. You also don’t need to add elements like linings or facings to a toile either, which means sewing up a toile in calico takes no time at all.

Remember - you only have ONE shot at your beautiful fabric. If you get it wrong, it can be very wrong, very time-consuming to fix, and very expensive.

So - why wouldn't you test out your pattern in calico first?!

So, How Does this Calico Help?

The purpose of making a toile or mock-up garment is so that you can improve your sewing pattern to make it perfect. Right?

That means you need to have a reliable way to capture your fitting information in 3D, and transfer all the markings and adjustments precisely onto your flat pattern in 2D.

Calico is your ideal matierial choice for toile because:

  • Calico is easy to cut and quick to sew.
  • Good quality calico can withstand a lot of manipulation and still keep its shape.
  • Any marking you make can easily be transferred back to your paper pattern.
  • You can even use your calico toile directly as pattern pieces for cutting out.
  • Calico is budget-friendly - and you get better value by the bolt!

I know it may seem like a pain in the neck to make a toile when you’re itching to get on with sewing your dress for real, but having a mock-up to check thing over will save you time, money and frustration in the long run, and you can avoid wasting your expensive fabric from failed attempts and unpicking.

Isn't Your Sanity Worth this Easy Extra Step?

"Perfect fabric for making a toile for a wedding dress project I have - and I'm so glad I did because we've avoided a lot of fitting issues!

This calico is a nice quality fabric at a value price - much better than I expected. You get a lot of value out of this bolt because of the extra wide width - it was especially useful because the wedding dress had large pattern pieces, and we didn't have to patch the calico or anything.

Overall, very happy. Good delivery service from seller. Would buy again for next project."

- Lyn, a Happy Customer

So, you ask...

Do you always make a Toile? Is there any reason why you wouldn't?

Here, let Aneka from "Made to Sew" explain when she would or wouldn't make a toile:

Regardless what sort of garments you make - from a day dress to a three-piece suit, to a grand ball gown - the more attention you pay to fitting, the less trouble your garment will be.

That means you can enjoy sewing the garment up, knowing there will be NO annoying issues like gaping neckline or armholes....

Believe me - it's much harder to fix anything when the garment is fully finished.

Sure - you could test your pattern pieces first.

But working with flimsy tissue paper is not easy..... let alone cutting them out and then trying to pin them on your dress form!

You might also find that tissue paper is so fragile - that means it's really not ideal for moulding on the dress form. Any attempt to pin them might just rip the pattern to pieces... and forget about trying to write on them - it's mission impossible.

And, if your pattern pieces get damaged to begin with, how on earth are you meant to continue with therest of the project - without an accurate pattern to work with...?

Instead, simply cut them out in calico first or better still - trace your tissue pattern onto proper pattern making paper (leaving the tissue paper pattern intact).

And just carry on with making up your mock-up in calico. No dramas!

And the most important thing is -
Making your own clothes is supposed to be FUN, remember?

"I used this calico fabric to make a trial run 'muslin' dress and made the necessary alterations with no problem with the fabric.

The fabric is perfect for the job. Holds its shape well and sews superbly.

Really pleased with this fabric. Much better than some others I’ve had before. Packed well and delivered promptly."

- Jenny a Happy Customer

Have a Closer Look at the Quality...

Let's talk about quality here....

The Weight of Calico varies between 100 - 180 gsm.

The unit "gsm" stands for Grams per Square Meter.
This denotes the weight of fabric.

To give you a better idea, let's compare fabric weight:

  • Standard Patchwork Cotton is generally 135 gsm.
  • Cotton Shirting / Chambray ranges betwee 120 - 140 gsm.
  • Sheer Voile & Chiffon are normally 57 - 85 gsm.
  • Cotton Lawn (think "Liberty" Fabric) is around 75 gsm.
  • Denim & Ponte Knits can range anywhere between 200- 340 gsm.
  • Our Calico is the perfect medium weight - at 140 gsm.
Just Right - with decent body and nice drape. Not too heavy, Not too light :-)

Why is the GSM important?

Because knowing the weight will tell you a few things about the fabric itself.

See, here are some amazing work good calico is capable of....

Think about YOUR ideal calico for toile / pattern testing.

You want it to be:
  • Matte surface with minimal movements - ideal for tracing & marking
  • Weave open enough for pins to go through effortlessly
  • Durable enough to withstasnd repeating folding and pinning
  • Has enough body to maintain shape & volume - gives decent drape
  • Light weight enough to be cut and worked with easily

You will find this Medium Weight Calico an excellent all-rounder.

Your Handmade Creation will fit & flatter perfectly - and you will NEVER have to deal with trying to fix ill-fitted garments, EVER again!

"A good quality medium-weight calico, delivered very promptly.

I bought it for making a toile for a dress and it is just right for that, you can also use it for crafting in general. There's quite a fair bit of fabric on the bolt and worked out great value.

I like how it is supplied in a single length - much better than buying by the meter. Being 240cm wide was great especially for larger projects.

I will buy again when this lot runs out."

Any delivery time estimates shown are estimates only - so please use it as a guide line.

You'll receive a few email updates from our system as your order progresses, so please stay tuned on these!

secure paymentHow will my order be sent?

We use a dispatch system that works out the most efficient way to send your order.

This way the postage works out fair and reasonable, and your parcel reaches you quickly as well - because we know you can't wait!

That means your parcel may reach you by either Courier or Aust Post.

In general, larger items tend to be delivered by couriers, while small items tend to go by Aust Post.

How is my postage calculated?

Great question.

Depending on weight and dimension, some times we are able to do Flat Rate across Australia, so the postage is the same no matter where you are.

Other times we use the Built-in Calculated system provided by Aust Post, and your postage is calculated based on YOUR location.

Can I get it delivered to my P.O. Box?

Depends on the item (and its dimensions), because Aust Post have size restrictions and couriers are NOT allowed to deliver to a P.O. Box.

Please check with us when in doubt.

If you have nominated a P.O. box, and the item is within Aust Post size, then it will go by Aust Post. Most of the time, this is the case.

When your item is too big, or being sent directly from our supplier, then we need you to provide a physical address so we can send a courier.

Can I get my order sent to a different delivery address?

Your sure can!

When you check out, you can choose to ship your order to your billing address or a different address.

Simply choose the second option, and then fill in the shipping address of where you want you parcel sent.

Please double check we have Your Correct Address so your order can find its way to you!

What if courier services are not available in my area?

Some locations are outside of courier services....

In these cases we CAN arrange for your order to be deliverd to your local post office.

But please provide us with a street address (street number & name) - even if it is the only Post Office in town - as if it is an office address.

A phone number would help too - this will avoid delays.

What if I need my order urgently?

No worries, we will do our best. Just let us know.

Please give us as much notice as possible - especially for special occasions like birthdays!

In most cases, we CAN arrange an upgrade from Regular Post to Express Post for a little extra.

Please contact us first so we can update your invoice to show the correct amount.

Do you offer combine shipping?
I want to order more than one item...

Sure! Please "Add to Cart" for all the items you want and let the system work it out for you.

If you're unsure, let us know. A quick message is all we need.

This way we can double check the postage for you. Simple!
