"Very nice fabric, beautiful prints. So inspiring!
Thank you so much for shipping my product so quickly. I am looking forward to the weekend when I can begin my project.... oh, can't wait!"
- Anne, a Happy Customer
Let's face it: so many of us dread the thought of selecting fabrics for a quilt, whenever we start a new project......
Because choosing fabrics means stress and agony of having to make decisions on the spot..... which could be pretty permanent....!
You need to consider colours, patterns, and whether something go together.... and after all that, still wondering IF the person you're making the quilt for will like it at all...
Phew.... talk about hard work, and you haven't started sewing yet...!
Imagine NEVER having another "meh" moment when you're so close to finishing your quilt, only to discover that you're not too sure about the choice of fabrics after all....
Instead, think about how satisfied you'd feel if the end result was just like what you've seen in the magazines or quilt shows, even better....
........ and EVERYONE commented on how amazing you are at choosing fabrics and putting colours together!!!
What if choosing fabric was easier than you think?
Hey, you might as well take credit for being AWESOME at co-ordinating prints for your quilt...
..... seeing you've done the hard work of sewing anyway!
Often the hard part is to come up with know the "how".......
Recently I had a conversation with a fellow local designer, Nicole Mallalieu (from the "You Sew, Girl!" fame)... about how people are amazed that some of us seem to have "a flair" in choosing colours and fabrics.
Since we both graduated from the same fashion design institute, we can vouch for each other that such "flair" was definitely more "nurture" than "nature" (i.e. none of us are born with the ability... we simply got trained...!!).
That means YOU too can have the "designer's flair".....
...... and actually ENJOY putting colours together!
There is no doubt that it will take some time and practice to get there.....
But the first step in becoming confident in choosing colour is to have the right visual aid at the start... this is the easiest way I know.
The Secret of creating stunning quilts EVERY time....
..... is simply starting with a Fat Eighth Bundle!
Take a closer look.......

What on earth is a "Fat Eighth"?
No.... it's not a body part :-)
To define what a "Fat Eighth" is, let's look at a "Fat Quarter" first....
A quarter of a yard gives you 9 inches of fabric, across the width of the roll - so you end up with a long, skinny piece - roughly 9" x 42". Not all that useful, is it?
Now, picture thisinstead: you cut one whole yard off the roll, and then fold this in half lengthwise and widthwise, you will end up with a couple of creases in the form of a cross.
Cut long these two line, and you get four pieces, each measures roughly about 18" x 22". That's a Fat Quarter.
Half that, and you get 9" x 22". That's your Fat Eighth. As opposed to a "skinny 1/8", which is a long strip of fabric that measures 4 1/2" x 42". Isn't the Fat 1/8 piece a much more user-friendly cut?!
Ok, what are Fat Eighth Bundles then?
Fat Eighth Bundles are made of Fat Eighth pieces.... stacked together and tied into a nice tall bundle.
See below - how cute are the Fat 1/8 Bundles, next to Fat 1/4 Bundles........ Adorable, arn't they?
Note: Photos shown for size comparison purposes only. See other photos for actual item for sale.
These are 9" x 22" pieces of coordinating fabric that come from the same collection of fabric (also known as a "fabric line", "fabric range" or "story").
Fat Eight Bundles (also called Fat 1/8 Packs) include one of each of the prints, anywhere between 25 to 40 pieces epending on how many different fabrics are included in the range.
Most of the well-known fabric manufacturers - such as Lecien, Kokka, or Moda - release Fat Eighth Packs with every fabric line they produce.
It is an easy way to get variety in your projects. If you love a fabric line, it's a great way to get a decent piece of all of it (and not miss out on any)... in one easy step!
Have you fallen in LOVE with a certain range of fabrics..?
Consider buying multiple packs of Fat Eighths.....
This way you will end up with more fabrics to play with, and this opens up your options when it comes to deciding what quilt design to go with (and what size to make them in).
Why Would I Want a Fat Eighth?
Because it works out BEST value :-)
Think about it.... the alternative is to buy Moda Fat Eighths individually.
Since 1 x Moda Fat Eighth costs around $4.00 each these days...
By ordering your fat eighths from us in a precut bundle means you can save more than $70.00 - that's almost Half Price - and you end up with the complete collection. How good is that?!
If you have a limited budget, this is the BEST way to get the widest variety of prints possible. Brilliant!
How does this Fat Eighth Bundle help me with fabric selection?
That's the BEST thing about Fat 1/8 Packs - you DON'T need to worry about selecting fabrics!
Because Fat Eighth Packs give you the ENTIRE fabric collection, the hard works of co-ordinating fabrics has been done for you...
You see, a fabric collection will typically include coordinating small / medium / and large scale prints, in several different colour ways. This gives your project the designer edge that looks like you've spend AGES on selecting just the right fabrics.
A well-known textile or fabric designer (sometimes a team) would have put in pain-staking effort to make sure that the fabric collection they produce are something that YOU will love, and hopefully inspire you to make quilts, garments and bags that EVERYONE will love!
When you purchase a Fat Eighth Pack, it's like having your OWN expert team of designers or friendly patchworkers picking out fabrics for you...!!
Hey, why not let someone else do the hard work for a change?
Once you have bought a few Fat 1/8 Bundle and made a few things from the fabric, you will find that choosing fabrics and co-ordinating colours / prints become less stressful over time....
In fact, you might even look forward to start putting together your own fabric stash when you go to fabric shops and quilt shows!
This is because as quilters, we all tend to be "visual" learners.....
By working and playing with fabric ranges that have already been put together by professionals, we learn to see what goes together, and what contrast with each other successfully. Another word, we learn by examples....
This is just like having your very own private tuition of colour and design theory, without any pressure and high cost.
Better still, you get to have heaps of fun and make tons of beautiful things for your family and friends too...!!!
(... they're gonna think that you are amazing....)
About the Designer.....
Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree & Co.
In her own words:
" I clearly remember creating my little colorful painting “masterpieces” in the backyard when I was 9 years old and then walking around the neighborhood convincing all of our neighbors to buy them. I guess in thinking back, you could say that both art and marketing has been in my blood since I was very young!
When we emigrated to the U.S. from Poland in 1975, my dad had a few thousand dollars in his pocket, a desire to make a better home for his family and a passion for creating a small business. My sister and I grew up working for the family business in one way or another until we moved away from home. My dad still loves to talk “business talk” whenever we see him but now it’s Fig Tree that we are talking about!
My desire to create something almost always starts with the color inspiration itself. Beautiful color combinations are everywhere if we can train our eyes to see them. A few colors that we see everyday, suddenly look fresh and new when put together into an unexpected grouping. I love that!
My designs, both for fabric & for quilting, always start with the color palette. I work with vintage fabric swatches, my flower garden, wrapping paper, children’s illustrations from the early part of the last century, flea market finds, antique quilts to start finding colors that speaks to me. The palette dictates the designs themselves and slowly a collection grows. I call myself a hybrid fabric designer. I like to use many different mediums and techniques to create my designs including vintage fabrics, painting, computer, line drawings, just to name a few. "
....and YOU get to enjoy instant success in whatever project you've set your heart on, because the fabrics speak for themselves!
